Verladescheune Ziefen
Conversion and renovation of an old barn
Architect: Oliver Brandenberger Architekten
Location: Ziefen, Baselland
Execution Year: 2004
The loading barn is located in the Recherareal at the entrance to the village of Ziefen. It was built in 1921 as a simply cut structure with a projecting canopy and a loading ramp. The conversion of the barn is the prelude to a comprehensive renewal of the entire area. The characteristic elements such as the canopy and ramp will be retained. Large openings cut into the facade bring light into the main rooms of the two maisonette apartments. Other window openings largely cover the wooden formwork of the façade, so that the light falls muffled into the more intimate interiors. Inside, the timberwork and formwork of the mighty roof truss remain natural. In contrast, the walls are completely white. Old and new remain clearly recognizable, yet blend harmoniously into a new whole.
