WALO house
new building
Architect: Duplex Architekten
Client: Walo Bertschinger AG
Location: Limmatstrasse, Zurich
Execution Year: 2019
The former WALO headquarters at a central location in district 5 was replaced by a town house with residential use. The sculptural structure contains various floor plan typologies for today's urban residents. The apartments have attractive visual references across themselves. The facade surface of the striking building body is organized by a horizontal division, which reveals a clear distinction of the base area, standard floors and the attic floor. Differently high balustrades made of polished artificial stone similar to terrazzo, window frames with anodised metal panels and fine railings made of metal cover the building as a braided shell and lend the facade a high-quality, almost textile expression. Due to the spatial depth of the facade and the fine detailing, the powerful building volume nevertheless appears elegant and light and fits appropriately into the urban space.
