Masdar City
Sustainable Urban Development
for "Du-Magazine"
Architect: Foster & Partners
Client: Masdar - Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company
Location: Abu Dhabi / United Arab Emirates
Execution Year: 2010 - 2014
Construction of the 'first carbon-free city' began in 2008 and the first six buildings of the city were completed and occupied in October 2010. Masdar City was designed by Foster and Partners. Foster‘s design team started its work by touring ancient cities such as Cairo and Muscat to see how they kept cool. Due to it’s unique construction the temperature in the streets is generally 15 to 20 °C cooler than the surrounding desert. Masdar is a sustainable mixed-use development designed to be very friendly to pedestrians and cyclists. Only the first stage of the project has been realised.
