The young Zurich office of Knorr & Pürckhauer Architekten was fortunate to develop a new courtyard building for the Catholic Parish Church Foundation of St. Peter & Paul in the inner courtyard of a typically dense block perimeter in Zurich's Werd district. The new courtyard building was intended to relieve the increasingly scarce space available in the existing building and to provide a place for all those uses that the building could no longer meet due to the increased demands on living in old age. In addition, the new building offered the opportunity to breathe new life into the somewhat sleepy-looking inner courtyard and to involve the entire adjacent neighborhood in the upgrading of the open space. In this context, the idea of a courtyard building developed that, as a pavilion, could meet both the demands of the new uses and its overriding potential as a meeting place for the entire neighborhood.
